Business thrives when creating a product that enhances a person’s life or when providing a solution to a person’s problem. In Orrin’s new book RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions For LIFE, he describes eight essential principles for building and maintaining long - term friendships. You’ll get your money’s worth from that book on chapter 7 alone. He goes on to discuss constructive ways to handle conflict in chapter 10. Is there anyone out there like me who wishes they would have handled a conflict with a person differently? Orrin goes on to reference several books found in the LIFE leadership and self development business like ‘Courage’ by Gus Lee, ‘Speed of Trust’ by Steven Covey, and ‘Crucial Conversations’. With all the watered down books on relationships out there, isn’t it great to have one of the world’s top 10 leadership gurus willing to give us his personal references?
One of my favorite books about relationships is ‘Personality Plus’ by Florence Littauer, also found in the LIFE book list. I’m sure this book saved my marriage, many of my friendships, and my business. I knew people were different, but I never knew why. This book explains it. After I learned why I was drawn toward certain personality types and repelled by others, my understanding of people deepened. Now, my knowledge of personality types has softened some of my rough edges and I hope has made me easier to get along with. I also find myself being attracted to people who used to rub me the wrong way. Learning about personality strengths and weaknesses has widened my scope of understanding of people of all backgrounds. People, like books, have a lot to teach.
Peter Senge from MIT and author of ‘The Fifth Discipline’ describes learning organizations as the key to the business of the future.
